Just Modern partners with Atomic Living Design

Awesome, cool, hip, retro and stylish are just a few words our clients and friends have used to describe Just Modern's new line of indoor furniture by Atomic Living Design.

A few weeks ago, my cousin Jackie (who recently moved to Colorado) was reading the Denver magazine 5280 when she came across an article titled "Twice as Nice - A Husband-and-Wife Team Rethinks Modern Furniture".  She immediately sent me an email saying that we should consider talking to them because they have amazing pieces similar to the things we offer and seem like a really cool couple/company! Jackie couldn't have gotten it more right!

After scrolling through their website and speaking with Lisa Detschermitsch, I knew it was a perfect match.  Stewart and I started Just Modern because of our passion for mid-century modern architecture, design and decor.  Our mission is not only to find new products that are inspired by this era and made in the US, but to work with artists and designers who are environmentally conscientious.

According to their "About Us" page, Lisa and Jesse Detschermitsch's  share a lifelong passion for mid-century modern architecture and furnishings, which has inspired them to design and build their own line of modern furnishings for the mid-century minded.  Their mission is to revive a desire for high design and heirloom-quality furniture of an era long since passed, and to use modern technology to make it an accessible alternative to the big-box stores selling foreign "goods".  They strive to be environmentally conscientious and use low and very low VOC water-based lacquers and eco-friendly sheet goods wherever possible.  They are dedicated to continually seek out new products that support their commitment to environmental responsibility.  **PLEASE SUPPORT MADE IN THE U.S.A.**.

Yes Jackie, you were right!  Thank you...

Gainey Ceramics breaks out the old molds!

Gainey Ceramics started in 1949 when John Gainey purchased the pottery company he was working for.  Over the years, this California based company has delivered quality ceramic pots in a variety of styles and colors.

Due to the recent mid-century modern buzz and popularity for authentic pottery, Gainey Ceramics decided to break out some of their old molds. We are very excited that they have reintroduced the Geo!

This beautiful mid-century modern pot comes in white matte (other colors too, but this is my favorite) and in three different sizes (12", 16" and 20").  I am very excited that we are able to now sell this amazing pot and look forward to Gainey's reintroduction of other molds!

Now available at Just Modern from $159 - $350

Modernism Week 2012 - It's not just about homes and decor...

Palm Springs Modernism Week is just around the corner.  This event last for 11 days beginning February 16, 2012 and is packed with so many different options (films, events, tours and lectures).  While many come to Modernism Week to view mid-century modern decor, design and architecture, I am most excited  to see the vintage cars, airstreams and travel trailers.

Monday, February 20th at 10:30am

This lecture by Jim Cherry is all about the concept cars of yesterday. When I heard about this, I immediately thought of the Batmobile and the Jetsons!  This lecture is $10 and will be held at the Hilton Hotel.

Monday, February 20th from 12 - 4 pm

This show is FREE and will be held at the Convention Center.  It is a great opportunity to see restored and well-maintained vintage automobiles.

Friday, February 24th  from 5 - 8 pm

This show is also FREE and will be held at the Desert Fashion Plaza.  There will be 20 vintage Airstreams and travels trailers on display.

Finding Inspiration from the past!!

Just Modern combs through just about every book and magazine published regarding Mid-Century Modern decor and design for inspiration.  We also spend a considerable amount of time searching the Internet looking at authentic pieces and advertisements...could my job get any better?

But it doesn't stop there! Now I am addicted to movies made in the 50's and 60's that depict the life and glamour we strive for today...it was simple, clean and kind of kitch, but in a good way!

Have you ever watched Pillow Talk?  Great design and very inspiring....

Mid-Century Modern Inspiration

Just Modern started from our passion for mid-century modern decor, architecture and style.  We spend hours combing the Internet for inspiration. Even though Just Modern specializes in new items that reflect those from the 40's - 60's, we love finding authentic pieces for ideas and for our personal use.  If you share the same passion, here are some great ways to find what you are looking for:

Authentic Mid-Century Decor

Ebay is probably the best source for purchasing authentic items.  Search for "mid century modern" and you will find thousands accessories and furnishings.  Some of our favorite purchases have been signs, glass, globes, ashtrays, tins, furniture and advertisements.

Etsy is now one of my favorite sites. Next to the search box, select the "Vintage" category.  Again, you will find so many authentic items.

Mid Century Modern Finds (MCFM) out of San Francisco has a great selection of vintage furniture and accessories. What I love most about their site are the photos and how they have their items displayed.

Retro Art Glass - If you are like, you probably love the glass products of the 40's, 50's and 60's.  Retro Art Glass has one of the best collections I have found on the Internet.

Mid Century Modern Architecture

Paul Kaplin Realtor showcases mid century modern homes. The original designs and architecture on this site are amazing.  Most of the homes are in the Palm Springs' area and the photos are professional.  This site is also a great source if you are in the market to buy (or sell) a home in the area.  Additionally, Paul has a really nice blog and resource page.

The Mid-Century Modernist also showcases homes, has some of the best vintage photographs and links to other mid-century modern resources.

Eichler Design (Enter the World of Eichler Design) is a really fun site to browse.  Again, great photos, plus original Eichler home brochures!

Hope you enjoy the links.  Please let us know your favorites!

Just Modern goes retro with Hip Haven

We are very excited to have added the Retro Bullet Planter by Hip Haven to our fiberglass planter collection!

The Retro Bullet Planter by Hip Haven is a unique mid-century modern inspired planter.   "Bullet" planters take their name from their conical bowl shape. Nested in a steel tripod stand, they appear almost ready for take-off. First manufactured in mid-20th century America, the planters reflected the era's fascination with all things "space age" and "modern."
Technological advancements in the 1950’s opened up new avenues for designers, allowing them to build light, durable objects with curves, lines, and integral colors not possible with traditional materials. Fiberglass-reinforced resin was especially popular. Used early-on in crash helmets, this fire-resistant, waterproof material was introduced into a wide variety of household objects from colorful lamp shades, to the classic Eames shell chair, to the bullet planter. Equally suited to a Modernist urban apartment as to the new crop of Atomic Era ranch homes, the colorful planters were an instant classic.

What happened to glamour?

Question of the day:

Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor are true icons whose look, style and beauty are an inspiration.  What ever happened to real glamour?  Will it ever come back?

Just Modern's New Design Page

Today we added a new Design Page to our site.  It's a great way to see all the product photos without combing through a number of web pages.

The purpose is to give you an idea of how multiple Just Modern products look together, in the same room so to speak.
